Pilot Training in the UK for Indian Students: Cost, CAA Rules and Visa (2026)

Pilot training in the UK for Indian students, in short: the UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) issues the commercial pilot licence (CPL), you must be at least 18 with a UK Class 1 medical, and our planning figure is ₹70–75 lakh+. To fly for an Indian airline you then convert the licence to a DGCA CPL.

Updated 29 October 2026. Rules and fees change: check the current UK CAA, GOV.UK and DGCA requirements before you pay.

How much does pilot training in the UK cost?

Plan for ₹70–75 lakh+ for a UK commercial pilot route. Living costs, visa fees, exams, the medical and DGCA conversion come on top. For comparison, our planning figure for training in India is about ₹75 lakh. Funding is available as pilot training loans up to ₹1 crore, subject to lender approval.

Always ask for a complete written fee schedule, including what happens if you need extra hours.

Commercial pilot training in the UK

Pilot training in the UK leads to a UK CAA commercial pilot licence. You can train on an integrated course or in modular stages, explained below, and then convert the licence to a DGCA CPL to fly in India.

What does the UK CAA require for a commercial pilot licence?

  • Age: at least 18.
  • Medical: a UK Part-MED Class 1 medical certificate.
  • Training: an approved course at an Approved Training Organisation, theory exams and a skill test.

Integrated CPL(A)

One full-time course with no prerequisites: at least 350 hours of theory training and at least 150 hours of flying training, including 80 hours of dual instruction, 70 hours as pilot in command (PIC), 20 hours of PIC cross-country flying, 5 hours of night flying and 10 hours of instrument time.

Modular CPL(A)

For people who already hold an ICAO-compliant PPL(A). You need 150 hours of flight time before the course, valid CPL or ATPL theory passes and a UK radio licence (FRTOL). Before the skill test you must have at least 200 hours of flight time.

Which UK visa do Indian students need for pilot training?

  • Student visa: for courses longer than 6 months. You need a place on a course run by a licensed student sponsor, enough money for fees and living costs, and English.
  • Standard Visitor: GOV.UK allows study for up to 6 months at an accredited institution.

Ask the school, in writing, which visa its course supports.

How do you convert a UK CPL to a DGCA licence?

Under DGCA's CAR Section 7, Series G, Part I, a foreign CPL holder usually needs to:

  • Get your logbooks authenticated by the issuing authority.
  • Pass DGCA's Air Regulations and Composite papers; the passes must be within 60 months of your application.
  • Hold a valid Indian Class 1 medical on the date you apply.
  • Pass a skill test in India on an India-registered aircraft type, plus an instrument rating test if your licence has no IR.

DGCA decides each case. Read our DGCA CPL conversion guide before you choose a country.

Should you train in the UK or in India?

  • The UK costs about the same as India on our planning figures, so the choice is about route, weather, visa and conversion, not savings.
  • Training abroad adds a DGCA conversion step before you can fly for an Indian airline.
  • No school, in any country, can promise you an airline job.

Compare every country on one page in our guide to pilot training abroad costs.

FAQ: pilot training in the UK for Indian students

Q: How much does pilot training in the UK cost for Indian students?

A: Our planning figure for a UK commercial pilot route is ₹70–75 lakh+, before living costs and DGCA conversion. Ask each school for a full written fee schedule, and compare it with about ₹75 lakh for training in India. Many students look at pilot training loans up to ₹1 crore, subject to lender approval.

Q: What is the minimum age for a UK commercial pilot licence?

A: The UK CAA sets the minimum age for a CPL at 18. You also need a UK Part-MED Class 1 medical certificate.

Q: Do I need a visa to train as a pilot in the UK?

A: Yes, as an Indian citizen. For courses longer than 6 months, a Student visa needs a place on a course run by a licensed student sponsor. GOV.UK says a Standard Visitor can study for up to 6 months at an accredited institution. Check which applies to your school before you pay.

Q: Can I fly in India with a UK CPL?

A: Not directly. You convert it to a DGCA CPL: authenticated logbooks, DGCA Air Regulations and Composite passes within 60 months, a valid Indian Class 1 medical and a skill test in India. DGCA decides each case.

Q: Is integrated or modular CPL training better in the UK?

A: Integrated training is one full-time course with at least 150 hours of flying training and no prerequisites. Modular training suits people who already hold a PPL and build hours in stages; you need 200 hours of flight time before the CPL skill test. Pick the route that fits your budget and timeline.
