Short answer: In India you must be at least 16 for a Student Pilot Licence, 17 for a Private Pilot Licence, 18 for a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and 21 for an Airline Transport Pilot Licence, under Schedule II of the Aircraft Rules 1937. There is no DGCA upper age to start training; the practical limits are the Class 1 medical, airline cadet age caps (18–30 to 18–40) and the rule that commercial flying ends at 65.
What is the minimum age for each pilot licence in India?
| Licence or step | Minimum age | Source |
|---|---|---|
| DGCA computer number (to sit DGCA exams) | 16 | CAR Section 7 Series B Part I |
| Student Pilot Licence (SPL) | 16 | Aircraft Rules 1937, Schedule II |
| Private Pilot Licence (PPL) | 17 | Aircraft Rules 1937, Schedule II |
| Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) | 18 | Aircraft Rules 1937, Schedule II, Section J |
| Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) | 21 | Aircraft Rules 1937, Schedule II |
The CPL also needs 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics (or equivalent), a DGCA Class 1 medical and at least 200 hours of flight time. Our computer number checklist covers the first step, and how to become a pilot covers the full route.
The Aircraft Rules 1937 still apply. A proposed replacement, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Niyam, had not been notified as final pilot-licensing rules when we checked the Ministry of Civil Aviation's rules page on 28 October 2026.
Is there a maximum age to start pilot training?
DGCA does not set one. You can begin training at any age if you can hold a Class 1 medical and meet the education requirement. Upper limits come from elsewhere:
- Airline cadet programmes set their own age windows (see the table below).
- Training academies may set entry ages. For example, one government-run academy's 2026 CPL advertisement asks for a minimum of 17 at joining and an upper age of 28, 31 or 33 depending on category, as of 1 January 2026.
- Airline hiring is a commercial decision, and age is only one of many factors.
What are the age limits for airline cadet programmes?
| Programme | Published age limit |
|---|---|
| Air India cadet pilot programme | 18 to 30 |
| IndiGo cadet programme (via its partner academy) | 18 to 40 |
| Akasa Air SkyCadet | Minimum 18 at application, maximum 40 at enrolment |

Can I become a pilot at 30, 35 or 40?
Yes, there is no legal bar. What changes with a later start:
- Fewer flying years. Starting a CPL at 35 and finishing around 37–38 still leaves over two decades before 60.
- Fewer cadet options. Programmes capped at 30 are closed; those capped at 40 remain open.
- Medical renewals become more frequent for single-crew commercial flying above 40 (see below).
- Finance may need different planning; see pilot training loans.
What is the maximum age for commercial pilots in India?
Rule 28A of the Aircraft Rules 1937, as published in India's AIP (GEN 1.7), says a licence holder aged 60 or over may act as pilot-in-command or co-pilot in commercial air transport only in a multi-crew environment where the other pilot is under 60 (with a limited exception for small single-pilot-certified aircraft of up to 5,700 kg operating multi-crew within India).
At 65, the CPL proviso in Schedule II restricts privileges to those of a Private Pilot Licence. DGCA also applies the age-65 limit to foreign pilots under FATA, as the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated in Parliament (PIB, 12 December 2022).
How does age affect the Class 1 medical?
DGCA's medical CAR (Section 7 Series C Part I, Issue II, Rev 6 of 18 October 2022, the latest revision we could read) sets Class 1 validity as:
- one year up to age 60, and six months after that;
- six months above age 40 for single-crew operations.
Class 2 is valid for two years up to age 50 and one year after that. Read our DGCA Class 1 and Class 2 medical guide before you start paying for training.
FAQ: pilot age limit in India
Q: What is the minimum age to become a pilot in India?
A: Under Schedule II of the Aircraft Rules 1937 you must be at least 16 for a Student Pilot Licence, 17 for a Private Pilot Licence, 18 for a Commercial Pilot Licence and 21 for an Airline Transport Pilot Licence. DGCA's CAR on examinations sets 16 as the minimum age to apply for a computer number.
Q: Is there a maximum age to start pilot training in India?
A: DGCA does not set a maximum age to start training. In practice the limits come from medical fitness and from each airline or academy's own entry criteria, for example 18–30 for Air India's cadet programme and 18–40 for IndiGo's and Akasa's (checked 28 October 2026).
Q: Can I become a pilot at 30, 35 or 40?
A: Yes, if you hold a DGCA Class 1 medical and meet the education and training requirements. A later start leaves fewer flying years before the age-60 and age-65 rules apply and may rule out some cadet programmes with lower age caps.
Q: What is the retirement age for airline pilots in India?
A: Under Rule 28A of the Aircraft Rules 1937, a pilot aged 60 or over may fly commercial air transport only in a multi-crew environment where the other pilot is under 60, and commercial privileges end at 65. At 65, CPL privileges are restricted to those of a Private Pilot Licence.
Q: How often must a pilot renew the Class 1 medical?
A: DGCA's medical CAR (Section 7 Series C Part I, Rev 6 of 18 October 2022) sets Class 1 validity at one year up to age 60 and six months after that, and six months above age 40 for single-crew operations. Check the current revision with DGCA.
Q: What age do I need to be for a cadet pilot programme?
A: It depends on the airline. Air India's cadet programme lists 18 to 30, IndiGo's partner programme lists 18 to 40, and Akasa's SkyCadet asks for a minimum of 18 at application and a maximum of 40 at enrolment (checked 28 October 2026).
