Short answer: A Boeing 787 type rating is rarely priced publicly. The one published figure we found is an estimated EUR 26,500 (≈ ₹28.1 lakh) at a Warsaw-based EASA training organisation, excluding travel and accommodation (checked 28 October 2026, at ECB rates for 27 October 2026). You will normally need a CPL with instrument rating, ATPL theory, MCC and a Class 1 medical, and in India the endorsement follows DGCA's CAR Section 7 Series B Part XIX. Most pilots do it after airline selection rather than self-funded.
How much does a B787 type rating cost?
| Example | What's included | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| A Warsaw-based EASA training organisation | About 3 weeks of theory, 9 fixed-base (OTD) sessions, 8 full flight simulator sessions and the exam; accommodation and travel excluded | Estimated EUR 26,500 (≈ ₹28.1 lakh) |
| A France-based ATO | 81 hours: 21 h computer-based training, 12 h theory, 44 h full flight simulator, 4 h skill test; no base training | On request |
INR at the ECB reference rate for 27 October 2026 (EUR 1 ≈ ₹106.06). We describe providers instead of naming them; ask us for the sources on a counselling call. We have not found a published Indian price for a B787 type rating, so we don't quote one.
What costs sit outside the course price?
- Base training (landings in the real aircraft), which DGCA requires before you use the rating and which many simulator-only courses exclude.
- DGCA technical and performance exams and endorsement paperwork.
- Travel, accommodation and visas for training abroad.
- Retakes or extra simulator sessions if needed.
What are the prerequisites for a B787 type rating?
The Warsaw-based centre above lists: a CPL(A) with ATPL theory and a multi-engine instrument rating (or another type rating), a Class 1 medical, and MCC plus advanced UPRT. On the Indian side, the January 2026 version of DGCA's CAR on endorsement training (Issue III; its final status is unconfirmed) lists the B787 in Group A with a minimum of CPL with IR, and requires MCC/JIT (12 hours theory and 20 hours on a simulator when combined with a type rating) and 72 hours of ground training. The earlier Issue II places the B787 in its Type A group.
Check our DGCA medical guide and keep your Class 1 medical current; it must be valid for the skill test and any training on the aircraft.
How do I get a B787 rating endorsed on a DGCA licence?
DGCA's CAR Section 7 Series B Part XIX applies to type rating training at an ATO in India or in any ICAO contracting state. In outline:
- The training centre and its simulators must be approved by the regulator of the state where they are.
- You pass DGCA's aircraft-type technical and performance exams.
- You complete the ground and simulator syllabus, including a skill test conducted by an examiner who did not train you.
- You complete base training on the aircraft before using the rating.
- Training records are submitted to DGCA for the endorsement.
Our Boeing 737 type rating guide explains the same DGCA process step by step for a narrow-body type.
Who flies the Boeing 787 in India?
Air India's fleet page lists the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9. Airlines usually train their own 787 pilots, often moving experienced pilots across from other types, so the most common route to the 787 is through an airline rather than a self-funded course. Airline hiring needs change, and we cannot promise any job outcome.
Should I self-fund a B787 type rating?
Think carefully. A wide-body rating without an airline offer is expensive and its value depends on whether an operator wants pilots with that rating at your experience level. Before paying, ask:
- Is there an airline or operator that will employ pilots with this rating and my hours?
- Does the price include base training, and if not, where and at what cost?
- Is the centre approved by an ICAO state regulator, and will DGCA accept its records?
For narrow-body options, see our type rating pages, including the A320 and ATR 72-600, or type rating training support.
FAQ: Boeing 787 type rating
Q: How much does a Boeing 787 type rating cost?
A: Few training centres publish a B787 price. The one published figure we found was an estimated EUR 26,500 (about ₹28.1 lakh at ECB rates for 27 October 2026) at a Warsaw-based EASA training organisation, excluding accommodation and travel. Other centres quote on request. Base training, DGCA exams and living costs are extra.
Q: Can a fresh CPL holder do a B787 type rating?
A: Training centres usually expect a CPL with instrument rating, ATPL theory, MCC and a Class 1 medical, and DGCA's CAR on endorsement training sets CPL with IR as the minimum. In practice, most pilots fly the 787 after airline selection, and a self-funded wide-body rating without an airline offer carries real risk.
Q: Which Indian airline flies the Boeing 787?
A: Air India's fleet page lists the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9. Check current fleet and hiring information directly with airlines.
Q: How long does a B787 type rating take?
A: Published examples are about three weeks of theory followed by simulator training, or a course of about 81 hours (computer-based training, classroom theory, full flight simulator and skill test). Plan on roughly one to two months for the course itself, plus base training.
Q: Does a foreign B787 type rating count in India?
A: DGCA's endorsement CAR applies to type rating training at ATOs in India or in any ICAO contracting state, provided the centre and its simulators are approved by that state's regulator and DGCA's requirements, including its technical exam and documentation, are met. Confirm with DGCA before you book.
Q: Is a B787 type rating the same as a B777 type rating?
A: No. They are separate type ratings. Some operators run shortened cross-qualification courses for pilots moving between related Boeing types, but that depends on the operator and regulator approval.
